Compare a product measurement with the same measurement taken from an item you already own. Do not compare a body measurement with a flat garment width, foot length with outsole length, or a size letter across unrelated charts. Keep the original unit and method beside every converted number.
Every useful measurement needs four fields
- Name: chest width, garment length, foot length, insole length, bag depth or another specific dimension.
- Method: flat, around, inside, outside, straight line or curved path.

When a garment has stretch, insulation or an oversized cut, the same number can feel different. Record the construction note beside the measurement instead of forcing a single universal size conversion.
Footwear: foot, insole and outsole length are different
Foot length describes the person. Insole length describes internal space, although removable and fixed insoles may be measured differently. Outsole length describes the exterior and usually should not be used as a direct fit number.
- Measure both feet and use the longer result as a reference.
- Confirm whether the chart asks for foot length or an existing shoe/insole measurement.
- Check whether the visible figure belongs to the selected size.
- Keep toe shape, width and sock thickness as separate fit considerations.
- Do not infer an exact regional size conversion when the chart provides a direct length reference.
If only a familiar EU, US or UK size is visible, look for the source chart before assuming it maps exactly to another brand or model.
Bags, watches and accessories need scale too
Fit is not limited to clothing. A bag should be checked for external width, height and depth, plus usable opening or strap drop when those affect the use case. A watch may need case diameter, thickness, lug-to-lug length and strap width. Jewelry and small accessories may need inner diameter, circumference, chain length or clasp scale.
When a listing shows only one number, write what it most likely refers to only if the image or label makes that clear. Otherwise mark the dimension as unidentified.
Convert units without losing the original

Keep the original value because repeated conversion and rounding can create a false difference between otherwise similar rows.
Allow for method and production variation
A displayed chart, a photo measurement and the item in hand can differ. Tape placement, fabric tension, curved surfaces and production tolerance all introduce variation. Treat very small differences cautiously, especially when two sources use different methods.
Comparison rule: reject false precision. A clearly documented range is often more useful than a single exact-looking number with no method.
